What we do: Health and HIV

The money raised by the first music festivals was used to open a Volunteer Counselling and Testing (VCT) centre on the hospital grounds in Nanyuki – the first of its kind in the area. This project became the start of Kijani’s HIV/AIDS programme, which has now evolved into a major project aiming to provide expert paediatric care and support for children living with HIV in Laikipia East District.

Nanyuki Cottage Hospital
Over the past five years, Kijani helped establish a Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) centre at Nanyuki Cottage Hospital and brought the first (and only) CD4 machine to Laikipia District. Today, Kijani is partnering with Gertrudes’ Children’s Hospital to support rural outreach health clinics.

PEDPACT
Together Kijani and Gertrude’s have created the PEDPACT project which will utilise funds raised by Kijani and the paediatric clinical expertise of Gertrude’s in order to bring expert care and treatment to children living in hard to reach areas of the Laikipia East district.

Winyitie Widow’s Group
More and more communities in Kenya find that as the mothers or fathers die of HIV related illnesses, that there is a growing number of children who are orphaned or vulnerable. Many communities have responded by forming support groups for those living with HIV, with the members of the support group caring for the orphans as well as each other. One such group is a fully registered community based organisation – Winyitie Widow’s Group based in Sweetwater, near Nanyuki.
